MAKE X Release and BarBookQue

May 20, 2017

Join us on Saturday, May 20th, 2pm-6pm, at Chicago’s own HIDEOUT for the official MAKE X release event!

Don’t miss the official Chicago release of our anthology, MAKE X: A Decade of Literary Art.

This spectacular event is free to attend and features a BarBookQue (yes, we did) with the finest culinary offerings including world-renowned pulled pork, coleslaw, baked beans, veggie burgers, Vitner’s potato chips, and more! Grab a plate for only $10. Bring the kiddos! Hang out on the Hideout patio and celebrate spring, while you’re at it!

Starting at 3 PM, contributors to the book and fantastic friends of MAKE—including authors Kathleen Rooney and Martin Seay; visual artist John Sparagana; Chicago historian Paul Durica; Mexico City-based poet Luis Felipe Fabre via video; and many more—will highlight their personal faves and/or tell us more about how their own work came to be and what they are up to these days.

With Chicago’s most literary comedian, Adam Burke, as host.

A live performance from Chicago writer and musician Marvin Tate with guitarist Bill MacKay to follow. With rotating DJs, including poet Fred Schmalz, throughout the afternoon.

More on MAKE X:
In this collection of work from over a decade of Chicago-based MAKE magazine, the editors offer the collective voice of MAKE through selected fiction, poetry, nonfiction and conversation, alongside art and stories. These extraordinary literary works and visual art portfolios were not chosen as a “best of,” but rather as a representation of the many parts that together have formed this celebrated magazine. Featuring a foreword by Eula Biss. Contributors include Mario Bellatin, Álvaro Enrigue, Lindsay Hunter, Jac Jemc, Valeria Luiselli, Maggie Nelson, Alissa Nutting, Roger Reeves, Mahmoud Saeed, Timothy Schaffert, Martin Seay, Nick Twemlow, Wendy Xu, Alejandro Zambra, Kate Zambreno, and many, many more.

The beautifully designed MAKE X also includes full-color visual art portfolios featuring new work from previous MAKE contributors, including Tauba Auerbach, Liz Nielsen, John Sparagana, Jennifer Sullivan, Siebren Versteeg, and more.

“This anthology is an explosion of astounding writing. Some of the dynamite originated in other countries and languages, some in English, all of it the kind of writing to light up your mind for days.” Idra Novey, author of Ways to Disappear

MAKE has always been a place to dig up gems, but the image of diamonds pressed between pages doesn’t really express how alive the pages are.” Amelia Gray, author of Gunshot

MAKE made something and made it big. There is a celebration in these pages. The MAKE editors know how to throw a party on paper.” Zachary Thomas Dodson, author of Bats of The Republic

“I’m in love with the MAKE anthology, which has a little bit of everything — poetry, prose, plays, graphic narratives, conversations; the list goes on. . . . There are so many worlds here, so many ideas and perspectives; it’s awe-inspiring. Bravo, MAKE!” Hannah Pittard, author of Listen to Me

“I don’t know of another literary magazine in America that has published so much blossoming talent, or one that does so with such an eye for diverse, immutable, scythe-sharp voices. Whatever the algorithm is for discovering ‘the next big thing,’ MAKE has cracked it.” Kristen Radtke, author of Imagine Wanting Only This
